Fraud Prevention Awareness
  1. Never wire money to someone you don't know.
  2. The lottery or Sweepstakes scam:  If you receive an official looking notice by mail or email saying you have won a large sum of money by lottery or sweepstakes.  In order to claim your prize, you are required to deposit the check and send a money transfer to cover taxes and processing fees.  Be aware that if you don’t remember entering a lottery or sweepstakes, you did not win.  Chances are these are scam to make you deposit the upfront money to process your claim.  Remember no legitimate lottery or weepstakes ask for money up front.
  3. Make sure the person you’re talking to is who they say they are. Ask for their name, and if you’re still not sure, ask them to tell you their last name or middle name. If they don’t know it or won’t give it to you, end the call and hang up.
  4. If you receive a phone call from someone you don’t know the conversation involves you sending money, don’t!  Don’t agree to anything. Don’t provide them with any personal information. Hang up the phone.
  5. Never wire money to a relative in crisis without checking out the story first.  Be sure to verify the story first before sending money.
  6. Never wire money to someone who says money transfer is the only acceptable form of payment.
